The Rules of the Game

Episode 15 of Adventures in Wonderland.

This is the first episode of the this series that I have ever watched. There are a number of differences from the standard Alice stories. For one, Alice lives in a regular home in our reality, but her bedroom has a mirror that she uses to travel back and forth to and from Wonderland.

The White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and Hare are pretty much to be expected. Tweedledum and Tweedledee, however, do not look a whole lot alike. Both are also played by black actors, the original story lacking anyone of color. The Red Queen is also played by a black actress.

There are numerous short songs through the episode, usually ones that are fairly cute. There's a number of rather humorous events, especially in this episode a take-off on the theme from Chariots of Fire.

The story also definitely contains a very obvious moral point.

The Mad Hatter and the Hare are creating a finish line. It's the Day of the Royal Games. The Mad Hatter and the Hare do a song about rules. Before long the girl playing Alice sings a song.

The Caterpillar sings a song. Then he tells Alice a story (which has its own illustrations). Then an educational aspect of the show is shown when Alice and the Caterpillar get into a discussion about how the bicycle got its name.

Alice finally gets to the games but they have already started and rules are being changed all the time. The Tweedles win the race and then do a song. The Queen then changes the rules so that she and Alice win. So she takes the bike and takes off. Unfortunately for her, she didn't stay long enough to listen to a warning about the brakes. They are only on the back seat of the two-wheeler, and she's riding on the front seat. Crash!

Alice returns and tells Dinah, her cat, that cheaters never proper.
