Alice

This is a very disappointing book, the first of three in the series. The problem is that it actually has nothing to do with the Alice of Alice in Wonderland. The name Alice is used as are names of other characters including Walrus, Carpenter, Jabberwok and so on. Except for the last one mentioned they are all actual human beings. They are vicious, horrible thugs and killers.

In this book the Alice of the book is in an insane asylum and has been there for some time. Hatecher (Mad Hatter reference, probably) is also there. The place catches fire and the two escape. Where they are is a place called the Old City. Then there's the New City with the two being divided by wealth. The rich are in the New City and the Old City has the poor and is thus broken down.

The Walrus is a mob boss and rapes girls and while having sex with them he eats their faces (and probably more.) This goes beyond disgusting. The Caterpillar is another mob boss. There's also mention of the Rabbit which Alice had something to do with and managed to stab out one of his eyes.

The book doesn't get any better, either. Alice does seem to have magic which, again, has nothing at all to do with the Alice of Wonderland.

I really very strongly dislike it when an author uses something as nice (weird, but nice) as Alice in Wonderland and ends up with some kind of extremely violent and/or sexual perversion type of thing.
