Aspects of Alice

Paperback, 526 pages. 1971. A few illustrations.

The book consists of essays about Lewis Carroll and his stories. They are divided into the following categories:

Personal and biographical
As Victorian and children's literature
Comparisons with other writers.
Philosophical and others
Church and chess
Language, parody and satire
Freudian interpretations
Jungian and Mythic
Psychedelic

The essays themselves go from the last quarter or so of the 1800's on through 1971. The Freudian ones are, in my opinion, rather over-the-top weird. The essays are also written in an 'academic' style meaning that they are generally rather boring. There may be a lot of material here, and some of it is interesting but the interesting parts are far outweighed by the parts you sort of have to slog through.
