Clockwork Goddess

The story is a steampunk type one that takes place in a Victorian Amerian in 1867. The main character is Alice Sims. Chicago has been bombed by Texas military airships (blimps.) Alice had been a prostitute but now wants to become an assassin. (Rather a major change of profession in my opinion.)

There are March Hares which a separate species from humans and serve as military and police forces. New York is the center of a Queendom and she hires Alice to kill a guy named Lord Busybody.

She runs into frog gatekeepers (bipedal frogs) at a mansion. The Cheshire Cat is also there. Meanwhile, back in New York, a form of Jack the Ripper is running around.

There are two Queendoms and they are in a war over some rich coal deposits. Texas has War-of-the-Worlds type mech devices that attack New York. There's also some Sioux that are part mech that are involved in fighting. The story ending is not satisfying and the entire story seems to be a buildup to almost nothing.
