Gears of Wonderland

This is a really interesting book. It has a male protagonist, James, who has a plushie Cheshire Cat in his office. The woman he's engaged to is a total bitch and throws him out of his own place. While visiting a friend someone storms in and kills his friend so James flees.

He ends up falling down a hole which has stuffing lining the walls, ending up in an alley. He's entered a Wonderland that has a total tyrant, Lahire, on the throne. The guy is totally insane and totally cruel. Worse, James is 'the one' who could change everything and Lahire wants to stop anything from happening.

Early on James is caught by thugs and saved by the White Rabbit. From that point on it's a struggle to survive. The main evil being is not Lahire but the force behind him, one of the Wonderland creatures from the story. It also turns out James has a tie to Wonderland that he didn't know about at all. An unusual but good story.
