Alice: A Look into Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & at the Curious Relationship between Alice Liddell & Lewis Carroll

Title

This is Alice Liddell who was the inspiration for the story Alice in Wonderland.

Lewis Carroll.

Alice is on the right. The film then talks about the history of her father. The film also goes into some very interesting things relating to religion and the school. It goes to to discuss how he tutored the young son of the Liddell's, how rumors got started about him and the children's governess, and how he backed off from the Liddell's for a bit.

It talks about he became a well-known photographer, and especially as someone who took portraits of people.

This is a photo of Alice that he took, having her pose as a beggar girl. Her left nipple is just visible.

The first published version of the story had a slightly different title. There were numerous physical differences between the real Alice and Alice as drawn for the book.

It talks about the break between Dodgson and the Liddell's and explains it as possibly being due to his asking Alice's parents, when Alice was 11 and he was around 30, to marry Alice when she became of marriageable age.

Arrangements were made to have the story published for everyone and an artist was hired. The first printing of the book was recalled and destroyed due to dissatisfaction with the poor printing quality. When it came out a second time it received positive reviews. The film then goes into an explanation of why Dodgson/Carroll included the things he did in the book. It goes into various people who were influences on the story.

Using material from a silent film version of Alice in Wonderland, and drawings, the narrator talks about various things happening in the film.

The narrator talks about linguistics in the film. For example, when the White Rabbit encounters Alice one time, he calls her Mary Jane. Mary Jane was, at the time, a generic name for a female house servant.

The film also talks about the sequel book, Alice Through the Looking Glass.
