Splintered

This is the first book in a series that promises to be really strange and really good. You start out with a distant relative of Alice Liddell whose name is Alyssa Gordon. Her very unusual ability is to be able to talk to and hear the words of flowers and insects.

Since her mother is already in an insane asylum, Alyssa doesn't want he ability to be known to anyone, realizing she could end up in such a place herself.

Apparently her family is under a curse. The problem? When Alice Liddell went into Wonderland she made changes (not on purpose) that ended up having bad consequences for Wonderland. It's going to be up to Alyssa to figure out what Alice did wrong and somehow fix it.

Another really good aspect of the story is that it follows along the path of the original Alice in Wonderland, at least in general. There's the rabbit hole, an ocean of tears (instead of a pool), talking flowers and so on.

There's also a guy named Morpheus who can appear with wings. He seems to have known her from childhood but what he is actually up to is hard to figure out for Alyssa.

One problem for Alyssa: she has to drain the entire ocean of tears. By herself.

This is the type of strangeness that goes on in this first volume and it all works really well. It's probably one of the best if not the best "odd" adaptation of Alice in Wonderland that I have yet read.
