The Wonderland Gambit: The Cypernetic Walrus

I really enjoyed Chalker's Wellworld series of books so I figured I'd try these. The basic premise is that everything you know is wrong.

There's some kind of something that causes the main characters to question the very nature of reality. It's somewhat like the Matrix, in effect. There's a machine of some kind that people enter and they end up in one of various simulations. They can die and then either be reborn, without their previous memories, or be transitioned, where they end up retaining their knowledge.

The inventor of the machine that humans have access to has either been killed or has disappeared somehow into the machine. The lab is called Wonderland. Roswell was real and it's possible some of the alien technology has been used. There's a group of people who seem to know what is going on, although one of them seems to be misusing that and somehow ends up with a group of very hostile aliens.

Maddox and Cory are two of the main characters although they end up translated into new bodies and names.

There's a whole lot of things going on and the basic premise of the entire series is fascinating, especially in the light of current writings on multiple universes, parallel realities or whether or not the entire universe we are in is a holographic projection from someone/somewhere.
