White Rabbit Wednesday

Alice has a brother who is two years older than her. There is some updating of terms in the story and they generally do not work. For example, at the tea party Alice is offered beer instead of wine. At the trial the rule of height is rule 63 instead of Carroll's Rule 42 (which number is repeated in other works of his.)

The mouse, instead of just being insulted, says that Alice just wants to laugh at his pain. Alice is told she's 'a pain in the backside.' The caterpillar says 'who the heck are you?' instead of just 'who are you?' By using such updates it sort of moves the story from the innocence of the time to the more harsher reality of today's time. It just doesn't work.
