The Voice

The episode starts out in the barn of a New England farmer. The event takes place in 1902. There are odd sounds and he says some people don't think the sounds are from any kind of animal. He says it's a tale of possessing which is fascinating, horrifying and funny.

There's a trial taking place. Two guys are being tried on a charge of arson. The prosecution has been having trouble finding an unbiased jury. One of the defendants says they are only guilty of 'Christian piety.' There's also a reporter in the audience.

The reporter is the man sitting nearest. The other guy has been talking to him and says that the defendants burned down a barn in order to kill a demon. The trial is taking place in Massachusetts. The potential juror is asked if he's descended from a witch or warlock executed in the state. The guy says he believes their are witches in the village.

The guy talking to the reporter takes him out to see the burned-down barn. The guy says the barn was burned down in 1691. He says a young woman was burned to death in the barn (which was a house at the time) because two twelve-year-old girls accused the woman of being a witch. The woman killed was the guy's great aunt, six generations removed. Then the guy says he'll take the reporter to meet the demon.

This is getting really strange. The demon is named Roger and apparently he's kept in the house under the sink. It seems the demon speaks both French and German from the sound of his voice. The demon is a racoon who then speaks Latin. Roger supposedly had killed a couple of cows and chickens 'because they laughed at him.

Roger the raccoon supposedly caused some children to die. The guy says he had caught the raccoon and given it to a woman at the house and it turns out the raccoon is possessed by a demon. The reporter comes back the next day and the woman says the people in the town don't want them at the church. The reporter has had a doctor (of some kind) brought in. The doctor explains that a raccoon can't sound like a human due to different vocal chords.

The reporter thinks a guy is using ventriloquism to make it sound like the raccoon is talking in order to get back at some townspeople who have made fun of him.

The guy the reporter suspects confronts him about his plan to leave the town before the trial is finished. The woman tells the reporter that the raccoon and the doctor talked without the guy the reporter suspects being there. The doctor says he and the raccoon talked for fifteen minutes in classical Greek.

The three guys are found guilty of arson. Some thug from the village has snuck into their house and killed the raccoon.

The woman suddenly starts talking in another language. The narrator adds that the girl had never attended school. The woman died sixth months later from scarlet fever.
