The girl, Juetian, is absent. (Her actual name is Hotta; I'll only use this one name this one time.)

She gets to class at lunchtime. In Japanese schools, students usually stay in the same room all day; the teachers are the ones who move. Students also eat lunch in the same room.

The two girls want Hotta to take part in the kendo tournament.

The department head says competing in the kendo tournament is very important to the school. Unfortunately, they need five students and only have three.

They've gotten a fourth student.

Michiko is jealous. She then talks about stories of the rat (or mouse) and the fox.

Mt. Fuji is getting bigger.

He talks to the deer.

He admits their kendo department has no chance of winning the tournament.

She refers to a time in the past when something major happened that was bad.

He goes to Osaka and she goes with him. His plan seems to be to steal the triangular.

While Michiko talks to the store owner, Ogawa hunts for the triangular.

He finds the triangular.

It shows the fox, mouse and deer.

He's caught.

It seems as if he's going to tell her what is going on.

He starts.

What the deer told Ogawa earlier.

The deer, fox and mouse have been working on controlling the catfish. If the catfish is not controlled, earthquakes and even worse can result.

I doubt that “screws” is the proper word.

Although it's probably close to the actual word.

This has to be done every sixty years.

The guardians didn't necessarily get along.

He adds that the seal on all of this could come off, and Japan would be destroyed.

She's in tears. She thinks he's delusional.

Hatto decides to join the kendo team. She's really, really good.
