Otousan, episode 1

A rather strange opening.

Their restaurant.

A customer calls and wants something delivered, but the one daughter says they can't because they are short-handed. The father gets on the phone and berates the customer, noting soba should be eaten fresh where it's fixed.

Even people eating there are not immune from his verbal lashings.

Their aunt, who tries to talk some sense into their father.

Her aunt is trying to fix her up with a guy. (This is all about the marriage business in Japan, where people can have arranged meetings with potential mates. It's sort of like the on-line mate finding services here, but more complex and in person.

It's night and the restaurant is closed, so they're cleaning up the kitchen.

Akira's practicing on what to say to her father.

Kei, another of the four daughters. Their mother is dead. Kei plays the piano.

Makoto, another of the daughters. (Kyoko Fukada, long straight hair)

Yu, the fourth daughter. She announces she's getting a divorce.

The aunt arrives to talk with Yu. She talks to Makoto (who apparently she has told before that she dates only losers), and then talks to Kei, who has a piano competition coming up. To make sure everyone feels her nosiness, she finally talks to Akira about her turning down a marriage proposal.

Kei announces that she wants to drop out of college. She also wants to stop playing the piano.

Makoto says she wants to rent a condo and live on her own. (She works at the hospital.)

Then they get into a discussion about their father.

The next day at breakfast he's acting suspiciously nice, agreeing to let Makoto move out, and apologizing to Kei, apparently willing to let her quit college and give up the piano.

He has his own announcement.

One of the workers at the restaurant.

The woman he wants to marry. The girls had all said she was too old when they were talking amongst themselves.

The girls are trying to talk the woman out of being interested in their father.

Akira takes a different approach. Instead of talking about bad things the father does, she talks about their birth mother.

They they get home, he asks the daughters what they thought of the woman.

The girls begin to express their objections to the woman. He finally gets mad at them.

He meets her and lies to her about what the girls have been saying.

The aunt offers Yu a chance to work at her beauty salon.

The problems in Yu's marriage revolve around the mother-in-law.

Makoto's boyfriend is pressuring her to get a place of her own so he can move in with her. He also makes her give him money to he can play the slot machines.

She lost the piano competition and won't be the one representing the school in some higher-level competition.

She's involved with someone who produces plays.

He wants her to move in with them but she's reluctant.

Later, the father explains why he wants to get married. He also reveals that his wife died on the same day of the year that the other woman's son died.

He finally explains everything.

He remembers what happened when his wife took ill and died.

Three of the girls say he doesn't need to get remarried, that he has them to be with. He tells Makoto she can't live on her own, Yu she should go back to her husband, and Kei that she should not drop out of school.
