Julia, in this case, is a psychiatrist who is also an alcoholic. Willie is a servant of the family and also has a major drinking problem. The others are closer to the originals in their natures.

First off, the characters are a lot different.

Note: I haven't watched the film yet. There seems to be a lot of difference of opinion in the quality, or lack of quality, of this version of Dark Shadows. The cover of the DVD indicates that it's supposed to be a comedy. Others think it's supposed to be serious but fails in that task. I'll state my own opinion of the movie after I've watched it.

I'll save a few scans from the movie but I'm not going into a scene-by-scene description since that can be found elsewhere.

Angelique kills his parents, by the way. Barnabas became interested in dark magic. There is a funny part when Carolyn plays Season of the Witch. One boy dies and comes back as a ghost to protect the girl. Dr. Hoffman has a serum that can cause her and the surviving boy to forget what they have seen.

Then there's a scene where Angelique and Barnabas get it on and it's the most ridiculous approach I have ever seen.

Later Barnabas decides to throw a ball (happening, according to Carolyn.) Throw in Alice Cooper for good measure.

Okay. My opinion after (finally) finishing the movie.

There was the potential to make an absolutely wonderful Dark Shadows movie here. There were parts that would really good and expanded on the traditional story. What takes this movie from great to almost laughable is the addition of unnecessary and very juvenile humor. The movie is schizoid in nature and that is what almost totally destroys its value.

If they would have gone for a straight, serious movie then they would have succeeded.

By throwing in the bizarre almost-sex scene, the vomit and a number of other similar things they degraded the movie. This went from an excellent Dark Shadows movie to an almost-parody of the original show. Thus, it fails on almost all counts.
