Dead End: A Book about Suicide
by John Langone; Little, Brown and Company, 1986
Even as this book was being completed, strong evidence was emerging that suicide is not being taken as casually as that: the United States government opened the Youth Suicide National Center. To be run by health professionals, with celebrities like actress Mariette Hartley, who played the mother of a teenage suicide victim in a recent TV movie, on its board, the center was formed to try and deal with the alarming, and growing, problem of suicide among adolescents. Said the director of the National Institute for Mental Health, Dr. Shervert Frazier, when the center opened, "There is no substitute for public awareness, understanding and a national commitment to stop the dying of our youth."
