Mariette Hartley to host ‘Today'

The New Haven Register, Tuesday, June 10, 1980

Mariette Hartley thinks the ‘Today' show is a nice place to visit but she wouldn't want to work there.

The actress, best known for her camera ads with James Garner, is co-hosting the ‘Today' show for the next three weeks while Jane Pauley takes time off to marry "Doonesbury" creator Garry Trudeau. Miss Hartley does not intend to make it permanent.

"I feel like I'm a rhinoceros now being asked to be a giraffe overnight," she said in an interview. "I think of this as a very informative, exciting three week sojourn, but my home is in California, I have my own production company, movies are coming my way now. It's something I've worked so hard for all my life."

Miss Hartley's husband is director Patrick Boyriven-not Garner as some fans believe- and the couple has two children, a daughter who will be 2 years old June 22 and a son who will be 5 in August.

The whole family has been staying in a suite at a New York Hotel. Miss Hartley spent the two weeks before going on ‘Today' studying the show.

"It probably will be like Tom (Brokaw) said. I'll get comfortable just the day I leave the show."
