The main points of: Beyond Sensation: The Hunger Games and Dystopian Critique

Although the movies display many dystopian elements we still watch them and read the books.

Many readers do not think about what the text/movies actually imply.

Readers take pleasure in the story even though it involves children killing children and they don't question why they like the story.

The foundational impulse of dystopian fiction is a critique of existing social/political systems.

Fans generally don't relate what happens in the series to what happens in real life.

Young readers to not recognize the dystopian nature of the series.

The series uses the first-person narrator approach.

It creates a sense of immediacy and connection.

Katniss is distraught about leaving her family but 'the allure of material comfort overwhelms her emotional response.'

(There are a number of things I disagree with in this article and the above is one of the major ones. Katniss did not look forward to the 'allure of material comfort.' First, she had no choice; she was on the Victory Tour and had no say in the matter. As far as material comfort, she had no experience with it and was focused on everything to do with the games and Haymitch as her mentor. She never gave in to the 'allure' of the Capitol.)

Readers need to note the opportunities for self-reflection in the novel/movies.

Katniss cannot understand the situations she finds herself in and cannot anticipate the results of her actions.

The first-person narrative limits the voices of adults who might educate her and the readers.

The books reinforce conservative gender roles.

Representations of girls and women in the series that become an object of desire and fulfilling a heterosexual role is a primary goal for female characters.(Again I disagree. For one thing there is no sexual activity in the series at all. There is no way to tell who is heterosexual and who is not other than Peeta and Katniss. In fact, Finnick was forced to have sexual relations with both men and women. Katniss wearing fancy clothing and being made up was not her choice; it was required of her and was useful to obtain sponsors.)

Throughout the series Katniss is 'nurturing, beautiful, submissive to adult male authority and, above all, chaste.) Was Katniss submissive to male authority? Yes. Why; for one, President Snow could have her mother and sister killed at any time. He's done the same type of thing to Haymitch and others. Does she work with Cinna? Again, yes. Again, no chioice. The men in the Capitol who run things? Yes. Again, no choice. She either 'submits' or her death or the death of her mother and sister will be assured.)

(Katniss and Peeta are not fully identifiable as traditional male or female since both of them are balanced that way. Katniss can hunt and kill but has a fierce protectiveness of her sister and Rue. Peeta is a baker and an artist but is madly in love with Katniss and does whatever he can to help her. Basically, there's not much I actually agree with in this article.)
