(This is an item for use in a classroom.)

The articles compares the Hunger Games and reality television.

It then goes into why Americans love reality television.(I watched one season of Big Brother, the one with Chicken George, I think, on it. That was enough for me. Long workdays and communication blackouts are normal for contestants.

They are not covered by normal Hollywood rules related to meal breaks, time off between shoots and even minimum wage. Most get little or no money for being on the show.

Most have to sign non-disclosure documents which have a major fine if they violate them.

The programs routinely use isolation, sleeplessness and alcohol to encourage wild behavior.

Contracts says that anything they say or do can be used for broadcast.

The goal of the program is to get contestants stressed, tired and emotionally vulnerable.

This makes them more easily manipulated.

The shows can be considered prime time family viewing.
