Main points of: Why Teach The Hunger Games?

The main points of this article include:

This is from a teacher who taught such a course and asked his students about it. One said his favorite character was Prim. Another liked Katniss because 'she was hot.' Another writing about Katniss said she was fierce, beautiful but didn't know how hot she was.

One student said he(she?) didn't like to read. (Plato said 'a room without books is like a body without a soul.' One online source said the average American reads `12 books a year.)

(There are a lot of teacher guides available for teaching a course using The Hunger Games. On the other hand the book is very high on the banned books list. In my own opinion, given the current political situation in this country, I don't think a teacher should take a chance using this series. It covers abuse of children, abuse of political power, misuse of the mass media and some other things that I think some parents would take a strong objection to.

If someone wanted to use the series it would depend on what level of education the series was being used at. I think it would be useful in an English class but also in sociology, psychology, history and probably some other classes giving the series a change to be taught in a multi-disciplinary approach in a school.)
