Cheeky Angel, volumes 13 and 14

Volume 13

Genzo and Meg go to the summer festival, and Meg actually wears a kimono. Several nasty guys try to start fights with Genzo but he doesn't fight them. Finally, though, one guy is about to stomp a baby chicken to death and Genzo blasts him. Then Keiko arrives and spots Meg and Genzo together.

Keiko and Meg will have a competition to find a treasure on a mountain. Each can bring one person along. They partner is to be drawn by lottery but Keiko cheats right off. Miki is also in the contest, and she draws Hitomonji's name (the samurai). Keiko pick's Ichiro's name. Meg gets Genzo. Yoshida, Keiko's female assistant, draws Yasauda's name (the pervert).

Then there's more punks again attacking Meg and Genzo.

Herein is a problem in the series. There is too much time being taken by these thuggish attacks. It paints a picture of Japan that makes it appear more violent than American streets, and the fact is that it is generally much safer than the U.S. Also, the attacks get to be too repetitive. It's like walk around fora little bit, get attacked, beat up the thugs, walk around, get attacked, etc.

There is one difference between these and American attacks, of course, and that is similar attacks in America would involve a heavy use of guns and knives. Japan has a relatively tight gun control policy, so guns are harder to get hold of and not used as frequently as in the U.S.

Volume 14

The fight with the punk continues. He hurts Meg but Genzo gets up again and this time handles the guy. Then later the punk gets in fight with the punk that was engaged to Miki. Then there's some background on Meg and Miki's relationship.

The race continues, much like The Amazing Race on television. Later there's a scene with Keiko and Meg in yukatas (like kimonos). Keiko's team is fourth at the first stage. Keiko and Meg spend a lot of the night trying to scare each other.

A whole group of punks seems to be organized just to cause the competitors trouble. Genzo handles the first attack on him and Meg. Another group attacks Hitomonji and Miki but he's able to defeat them. Yasuda is hurt in another attack.

Miki gets incredibly mad and starts beating up the thugs in her way. Meanwhile, the devil being in the book is revealed as being somehow involved with what is going on.

This volume is basically all violence with none of the humor in the first volumes.
