Avril Lavigne's Make 5 Wishes

Volume 1

The main character is Hana who idolizes Avril Lavigne and constantly images her nearby, talking to her and being friends. Otherwise, though, Hana is definitely a loner. She finds a web site that says it sells something that will grant wishes and she goes ahead and buys it.

It turns out to be a demon that will grant 5 wishes. It turns out, though, that it's more like a djinn. It grants wishes, but the wishes will not be fulfilled in the way the wisher really wants. Hana rather quickly uses four of her wishes, one of which has a terrible effect on an old man.

One of her wishes is that she wants everyone at her school to like her. She wants to be loved. Her parent's marriage is falling apart, and neither of them can really figure out what to do about Hana.

An interesting but very dark manga.

Volume 2

The true nature of the demon becomes known when it reveals who it's granted wishes for in the past, like Marie Antoinette and Faust. Hana wanted her parents marriage to get better, but he grants it by having them split up totally and each one finding happiness separately, later.

The demon causes an explosion that kills two students and a teacher. Hana is the only one in the room to survive it. Other things happen that are bad, including the slightly inconclusive ending of the book which really, totally and truly, sucks.

This was an absolutely dark, horrible book that really accomplishes nothing other then push the messages about not trusting anyone and no matter how bad things are at the moment, they could be a lot worse.

The Dresden Files have a more positive outlook than this book. Best advice; don't read it. Or the first one, either.
