Kare Kano

This is an interesting manga starting out with Yukino Miyazawa, a high school girl who outwardly appears perfect in looks and intelligence. Her male counterpart is Sochiro Arima and from the beginning she sets up a major competition between the two where she just absolutely has to be better than him in everything.

Inwardly, though, Yukino is not the nicey-nice girl she appears to be; she's somewhat of a fake. The first volume explores this and what seems to be a developing relationship between the two.

There is also another story in the manga, The Tiger and the Chameleon, and I actually liked it even better than the main story. In this one a girl who wears glasses and considers herself ugly collides with a boy, breaking her glasses in the process. It will take a week for her glasses to be fixed and he volunteers to be her eyes for the entire week, guiding her and helping her however he can.

This is a really good story about how people perceive themselves and judge themselves based on what others say about them.

The situation gets a lot worse for the two when their grades decline and the teacher wants them to break up and devote themselves totally to their studies. Fortunately, their parents support them and they can still keep seeing each other.

A girl from Arima's past appears and wants to break them up, but Arima sees past her manipulating. There's material on the lives of some of the parents, a family tragedy from the past for Arima, and more on the ever-deepening love between Arima and Miyazawa.

There's a really good section about a school play that's put on. There's also a lot of backstory for other characters in the series.

Note that, as the story goes on, the lives of other people are covered, all under the "his and her circumstances" idea, and the stories all stay really interesting and well done.
