Reality Check

This is a futuristic story about a tenth grade boy named Collin Meeks who loves to go online into the world of virtual reality. Unfortunately for him, so does his cat, Catreece. What follows is a series of adventures with some very strange beings including a computer virus that consists of puffy cats, ghouls and other assorted individuals.

This is one of the very few Tokyopop manga that I don't really care for. It's not that I dislike it, it's just that I don't find it that particularly interesting. Part of the problem is the way the manga is printed. Instead of the normal manga consisting of drawings set against white backgrounds, Reality Check consists of drawings set against equally dark backgrounds so that the drawings themselves fail to stand out. It basically gives the manga a very somber appearance, which is precisely what it should not look like since the manga is one dealing with comedy.

The drawings are good, especially of Catreece, but it's all offset by the unfortunate choice of backrounds. It's one of those few manga that, instead of wanting to read it all the way through at one or at most two sittings, I found myself reading a little and getting back to it when I didn't really have anything else major to do which, in itself, is not a good sign.
