Tokyo Mew Mew

This is one of the strangest titles to a manga series that I've ever seen. When I read a short description of the series I was reluctant to read it, but I finally decided to give it a try and I'm quite happy I did.

The story concerns some young girls who are just plain average girls until they are injected with DNA from a variety of animals, allowing them to turn into animal/human hybrids when they get excited. Ichigo, for example, turns into a cat.

The reason the girls are changed is so that they can combat aliens who are trying to use animals to attack humans.

The girl named Mint has the DNA of a bird added to her; the one named Letuce has DNA from a finless porpoise. Pon Purin, the youngest member, has the DNA of a monkey added to her, and Zakuro, a famous celebrity, has the DNA of a wolf.

Like the Sailor Moon series, the first girl, Ichigo, has to search for the other members of the team and in the first volume she finds two others.

The story, like various others, also deals with other problems young girls face in their lives so that makes it even more interesting. Add good artwork and comedy and you have a worthwhile series.
