Devil Hunter Yohko

Volume 1

Volumes 2 & 3

Volume 6

Volume 1

What you've got here is a lovely teenage girl with a slightly oversexed mother and a very short but wiry grandmother. The mother keeps wondering if her daughter has done "it" yet, and the grandmother is very skeptical of the mother.

If matters rested there you'd just have a slightly unusual family, but there is one little problem here. The grandmother is a demon hunter, and the daughter, unbeknownst to her, is being brought up to be the 108th devil hunter of the family. As with so many of the anime you have a school with a warped principal who ends up seducing Yohko's boyfriend.

Matters don't improve when Yohko is almost pulled to her death in a swimming pool by some form of tentacled creature, then seduced by her somewhat changed boyfriend who is just about ready to penetrate her when, well, something odd happens.

Yohko is finally informed about what is going on, and she discovers that she can get a brand new costume whenever she wishes (with the obligatory nude-girl-turning-around section). Of course into each life some rain must fall, and Yohko has to deal with a planned major demon invasion of the earth, the possible downfall of the entire human race, the school principal who wants to kill her, grief over the loss of a family member, and a few other problems to take care of when she's not busy with all the others.

Volume 2

The second episode sees Devil Hunter Yohko joined by a devil-hunter-in-training, along with a devil-hunter manager. Greedy construction people have been tearing down an ancient forest in order to put up a new building, and in the process release some protective demon spirits from the forest. Devil Hunter Yohko has to stop these and see if her new "assistant" can manage with her own new devil-hunter status.

I tend to feel sorry for the demons in the forest, and I was quite happy when Devil Hunter Yohko and her new protege treated the forest respectfully and fixed a shrine that had been broken by one of the construction workers.

Volume 3

The third episode is probably the most complex one of all. Yohko is pulled through a dimensional warp into another world after dreaming of a handsome man. It turns out the man is real and a prisoner within a sphere within a demon. It's her task to try and set him free.

Meanwhile, back in the bedroom, the protege and the manager find a way to enter the world Yohko had been pulled to, managing to end up in the middle of a battle.

Both end up back in the bedroom, leaving Yohko to deal with the demon alone. She hopes to free the man and win him as her own.

Volume 6

This volume concerns Yohko's grandmother's past. It's hard to write about this one without revealing too much. I'll just say that there is a family past that Yohko knows absolutely nothing about at first, and that past has produced two individuals who are of very great threat to Yohko.

Parts of this episode are very funny, and there is much more nudity than normal. On the other hand there is the death of an individual and that death is pretty much just passed on over as nothing really of any great importance in determining the character, or lack thereof, of one of the people threatening Yohko.
