Shigekikkusu

(From Mangajin, #45)

Japan produces some of the most bitter candy known to man. Witness the expression of on the man's face on the package-not to mention his lightning-bolt hair. Clearly he has just popped into his mouth a Shigekikkusu Supa Minto ("super mint") candy-a tiny, green, gummy ball that packs a powerful, face-scrunching punch.

Shigekikkusu is a made-up word loaded with meanings. Shigeki means a "stimulus," "impetus," or "spur." Here it shares a ki with kikku, taken from the English word "kick" and carrying the same sense of "bite" or "zippiness" as in English. Kikku also encompasses the verb kiku which means to "take hold" or "have an effect".
