Alternative Labyrinth Scripts, one version

The final script for Labyrinth gave us the story of Jareth and Sarah, the labyrinth and a group of interesting characters along with some nice music.

That was the filmed version but there are at last two other scripts that would have presented a much different picture. I was able to get one entire script and found an article about another one.

First, I'll cover what was an article I found with information about one of the older scripts. The main points of the article include:

Sarah's house is Victorian in nature.

Apparently the setting is Victorian England.

Her infant brother is named Adam, not Toby.

She wishes him away to the goblins.

She ends up in an all-white world, finds a white apple and starts eating it.

The sky turns black and Jareth appears. He sings something to her and tells her to leave the Labyrinth, that she will never see her brother again.

He says no, he gets angry and vanishes.

She falls backwards into a stream which becomes a river. She swims her way to shore.

A little bird flies by and tells her about the Labyrinth.

The bird says it can see fear at the castle.

Sarah meets Hoggle.

She enters the labyrinth.

She answers a riddle.

She falls down the shaft of hands.

She bribes Hoggle with a broach and he leads her back to the labyrinth.

Hoggle tries to run away but she stops him.

They find the Wiseman.

She finds the two door knockers.

They go through a door and find laughing flowers. Sarah laughs so hard Hoggle has to drag her to safety.

Hoggle leaves her.

She enters a forest filled with bones but they end up crumbling when she breaks one.

She encounters the Wild Things who say they will lead her to a castle but they don't know what a castle is.

They chase her into a forest where Hoggle saves her by throwing down a rope she can climb.

They fall down a hole in the mountain.

They see a mud monster but when it washes itself off in a waterfall it turns out to be Ludo.

Ludo has powers. He howls and trees form steps so Hoggle and Sarah can climb up to the top of a cliff.

They meet two figures: Colonel Apocalypse and Corporal Skeleton.

They are in the Lost Ground.

Sarah, Hoggle and Ludo leave them and end up in a desert filled with holes. Sarah doesn't remember why she came to the labyrinth.

The Lost Ground caused her to forget her mission.

They see a tall blue building which is the Dream Castle.

Hoggle warns her to stay away from there.

She enters the Dream Castle which is somewhat like the ballroom in the actual movie. Ludo sings song of howls.

The Junk Woman shows up but there are a bunch of junk people.

The Junk Woman gives her a amulet which won't come off and starts changing Sarah into a junk woman.

Sarah sings a song.

She meets Sir Didymus and together they free Ludo from a cage he had been put into.

Later they encounter character called Old Boulder.

Sarah remembers her quest.

Jareth is not the Goblin King's actual name.

They use a rock craft to get to the main castle.

They enter an Esher-type room.

Jareth tells the goblins to stop healing babies.

Jareth's goblins attack Sarah and Ludo but Hoggle has his own goblin group and they defeat Jareth's goblins.

Sarah finds Jareth on a throne but he's incredibly old.

Jareth says Adam is safe at home.

His says the labyrinth cannot be solved and he cannot control it.

Sarah reaches to comfort him but he crumbles to death and the castle and her friends vanish.

Sarah is transported home where Adam is safe.

Sarah still has the medallion Hoggle gave her, though, so it wasn't a dream.

Labyrinth alternative script 2

This is, fortunately one I actually have the script to so I will just briefly list the things that happen. This is a much, much more serious version than the actual movie. The main events in the script are as follows:

A white bird is flying.

The labyrinth is shown.

The scene with Sarah practicing the lines of a play (as in the actual movie).

She heads home and sees a steel mill.

She gets home and is told she was supposed to babysit Freddie (not Toby.)

We find that the woman in the house is her step-mother.

We see the inside of her room.

She finds out Freddie has taken one of her stuffed animals.

Freddie keeps crying.

Sarah does a dance to a very dark song. It involves goblins.

The doorbell rings and she opens the door.

The guy identifies himself as Robin Zaker who wrote the play she has been practicing.

Freddie keeps screaming and she goes to check on him.

Zaker keeps following her around the house even though she wants him to leave.

Zaker tries to entertain Freddie but the kid keeps crying.

Zaker pulls out a goblin from his pocket.

Fredd]ie has disappeared and Zaker is still there.

Freddie seems to be in a chair playing with a goblin puppet.

Zaker reveals he is Jareth, King of the Goblins.

Loads of goblins show up and Jareth takes Freddie.

The whole group vanish into the sky.

Next day we see the labyrinth and Hoggle peeing. He finishes doing that. (Why was it necessary to include this scene?)

He's checking out a shrub when Sarah falls from the sky.

He gets mad at Sarah for falling into the shrub.

Hoggle tries to spray her with a spray can but she just picks him up and demands to know where her brother is.

A gate opens and a 'terrified creature' runs out chased by two goblins. They catch him. There's a whole goblin army inside the labyrinth.

Hoggle tells her in order to get Freddie back she has to go through the labyrinth since Jareth's castle is in the middle of it.

Hoggle tells her there's various ways into the Labyrinth but only one way out.

He wants to be paid for helping her.

A flower fairy bites her.

She encounters a couple of faces that tell her to turn back while she can.

Sarah marks a cobblestone and a brickkeeper turns it around when she isn't looking.

Jareth shows up. He tells Sarah he's thinking of turning Freddie into a goblin.

He'll give her 13 hours to come to Freddie's rescue.

A worm talks to Sarah.

They encounter the Wise Man.

The guy's hat isn't overly confident in the Wise Man's wisdom. They end up leaving.

Jareth is looking out a window and a goblin comes to talk to him.

The goblin tells Jarenth that Sarah and Hoggle are halfway there.

Hoggle and Sarah encounter a battalion of armed goblins.

In the castle Jareth sings a song about the labyrinth.

Hoggle and Sarah encounter small furry creatures and wall creatures.

They escape the goblins but fall through a hidden doorway. They are at the second part of the labyrinth. It's the Garden Maze section.

The slashing machine in the corridor then occurs.

Sarah escapes through a door and Hoggle falls through the floor.

She sees a couple of pictures on a wall.

Sarah sees a painting with Hoggle in it talking and a bird flying. She falls through the painting.

They hear someone or something screaming.

She sees four goblins torturing Ludo.

Sarah manages to distract the goblins and they run away, chasing one of their own.

Sarah frees Ludo just as the goblins are coming back to attack but he throws a log at them and they run away. Hoggle is hiding.

They get to two doors which are the entrance to the Forbidden Forest.

Then the scene from the movie with the two doors occurs.

(By the way, this script has drawings in it.)

Sarah goes through a door and ends up in a forest. The door has disappeared.

Hoggle gets through the other door and falls down ending up in water.

Ludo talks to the Wise Man.

Sarah runs into the Wild Things as in the movie.

Hoggle is holding on to a ledge and about to fall when Jareth and goblins show up.

Jareth demands Hoggle deliver Sarah to her or he will drop Hoggle into water knowing he can't swim.

He gives Hoggle a peach to give to Sarah.

Ludo shows up and saves Sarah from the Wild Things.

Ludo and Sarah find Hoggle.

Then they run into Sir Didymus.

Sir Didymus attacks Hoggle (without much effect.)

Sir Didymus and Ludo fight but they both become exhausted and stop fighting.

Sir Didymus lets them pass him on the bridge. Things don't go well.

Ludo starts to cross and the bridge collapses.

He then calls rocks and they form a bridge they can use.

Hoggle gives her the peach and she bites into it.

In the castle Jareth makes crystalline floating balls which Freddie likes.

Freddie's feet are turning into goblin feet.

The bubbles go to where Sarah is and she follows them.

She ends up in a bubble.

The bubble ends up in the huge ballroom bubble.

A young man tries to hit on her.

A middle-aged man approaches her with a music box around his neck.

A snake springs from the box and Sarah backs away.

Sarah sees Jareth dancing with her.

Jareth sings a song to the Sarah he is dancing with.

She stumbles against a wall, a door opens and she sees a pillow fight going on in the room.

She crashes through the bubble into a junkyard/tents with stuff for sale place.

The junkyard woman is there, opens her tent and Sarah's room is inside.

Sarah thinks it's just a dream but she opens her door and the junkyard woman is there in the junkyard.

A mirror shows her as a very old woman.

Ludo and Didymus are searching for her.

Hoggle's in a bar getting drunk.

Sarah hears Didymus and cries out for him.

She pushes her way through the junk and tells the junkwoman to get out of the way.

The camera shows a cross-section of the junkyard woman and Jareth is inside.

Sarah finds Ludo and Didymus.

The three move through the goblin village and it seems the goblins are afraid of her or something as they close windows, etc.

Hoggle is still in the bar and still drinking. He gives the bartender the plastic circlet Sarah had given him, puts his head down and cries.

The Wise Man is at the other end of the bar.

Hoggle listens to the Wise Man and leaves the bar.

Didymus, Sarah and Ludo are attacked by a whole bunch of goblins and they have to run away.

They run away but get attacked again by the goblins.

Ludo calls rocks and they rocks smash into the goblins.

The rocks form a barrier between the goblins and the three and the three climb over the wall.

They then enter the castle.

Hoggle, drunk, is in the castle singing.

Some kind of small pet/creature sees the three and this alerts other goblins.

On a balcony a goblin pulls a lever, opening an endless pit and trapping the three between the endless pit and charging goblins.

Hoggle throws the goblin off the balcony and closes the pit just in time.

Hoggle is hit by a spear thrown by a goblin.

Hoggle falls against the lever, opening the pit door and stopping the goblins.

Ludo smashes a door open.

The three rescue Hoggle and put him into the room they have gotten in to.

Sarah says she has to face Jareth alone.

She forgives Hoggle.

She enters the Esher-type room as in the movie.

For a while it's like in the movie.

Sarah falls on to a bed. Jareth is opposite her, sitting in a chair. Freddie is in a blanket on his lap.

Jareth offers Sarah a chance to rule by his side.

Sarah runs to rescue Freddie. Jareth tries to stop her but she punches him in the jaw.

He says 'You Hit Me!' She then kicks him in his shin.

The white bird seen before flies in and lands on Sarah's shoulder.

Jareth shrinks and turns into a small, sniveling goblin.

He complains that no one ever cares about what he wants.

The room starts shaking, a crack opens up and Sarah jumps into it with Freddie.

Sarah is stunned and Freddie is not in the room.

She goes out of the room and sees Freddie crawl into her room

He wants her Lancelot bear and she gives it to him.

The white bird perches in the tree outside the house.

The movie ends.
