Vampire Academy

Lissa is a mortal vampire and a Morai princess. Rose is a Dhampir (one parent is a vampire, one a human). The Strigoi are evil vampires. Rose is Lissa's guardian, protecting her from the Strigoi.

Rose and Lissa are kidnapped and taken to the Vampire Academy. (They had escaped from it previously). Sometimes Rose can mentally slip into Lissa's mind.

When they get back to the academy, Rose is almost expelled, but is allowed to stay due to her bond with Lissa.

The Moroi have a group of humans they regularly feed from, and the humans are offering themselves voluntarily. The Moroi are also living vampires that can use magic, while the Strigoi cannot.

Lisa confronts a guy named Christian, while Rose is mentally in her head. He has a bad reputation, and people fear he might become a Strigoi.

Dhampirs can only reproduce with full Moroi, so if the Moroi are killed off by the Strigoi, all the dhampir will also die.

Someone leaves a dead fox on Lissa's bed.

Lissa talks to Christian. Christian thinks the Moroi should use their magic in an offensive manner.

At a banquet, the Queen disses Lissa.

Then a Lissa finds a dead, torn-up rabbit. There's also continuing references to some dark secret that she hides. It could be that she can heal things and even bring some back to life. Lissa has the ability to use compulsion on people, getting them to believe whatever she wants them to believe, and she plans to use it to help Rose.

One of Rose's teachers, she finds out, has become a Strigoi and is being hunted.

Rose becomes worried that Lissa might follow the same path. Lissa ends up getting kidnapped, and Rose and Dimitri (her trainer) go after her.

The rest of the book concerns finding out who is behind this, what happens to him, what happens to Rose and Dimitri, and what Rose “shadow-kissed” means.

A very good book. I like the way the characters are written, and it's interesting to have the main character (Rose) actually be technically subordinate to the second main character, Lissa.

Given that regular cities like Chicago are mentioned, then I wonder what the relationship is between the groups of vampires, dhampirs, Moroi and Strigoi, and regular humans? Would regular humans even allow such groups to continue to exist?
