The Dead & The Gone

This is the sequel to Life As We Knew It, the story of what happened to a girl named Miranda after a comet hit the moon and caused it to get near to the Earth and set off a series of catastrophes.

In this book, the main characters live in New York City. There's Alex, and his sisters Briana and Julie. There father is in Puerto Rico and their mother working at the hospital when everything “goes to hell in a hand basket” as the saying goes.

It's a story of a brother and his two sisters trying to survive in a New York City that is devastated. It's a horribly grim story, probably even darker than Life As We Knew It. Death is everywhere and it's very, very realistic in this novel. If you have the ability to visualize things in your head as you read, this is the type of book that will give most people nightmares for a long time.

Not only is the book written very well, but it's also extremely realistic. No country is prepared for a disaster on the level of what happens in these novels. It's a nuclear winter/disease ravaged/tsunami soaked/no real help is coming type of disaster, yet some people have the strength, even in such terrible conditions, to manage to carry on. Somehow.

I would not recommend this book for those who are really sensitive and upset easily. It's gruesome, but understandably so given what has happened in the story.
