Don of the Dead: Pepper Martin Mystery #1This is an absolutely wonderful novel about Pepper Martin and the ghost of a mobster don. Pepper Martin works at a cemetery giving tours and speeches. One day she trips and falls, hits her head, and after that she is able to see the ghost of Gus Scarpetti, who died decades before and wants to know who had put out the hit on him. He's not leaving till he finds out, no matter how much he bothers Pepper, and she starts to do some research on the old murder. She finds old newspaper articles, talks to some of his former gang, and finds out that someone doesn't want her digging in the past, a someone who tries to kill her. Twice. There's also Marie, a very old woman, who plays a major part in the story, the don's son, head of the gang now, and two different guys who seem to want Pepper as a girlfriend. Problem is, one of them isn't at all what he seems to be. It's also a story about family and forgiveness. It's really, really good. |
