Frostbite

Rose is a damphir, a part-human, part-Moroi being who is being trained to be a guardian for a Mori. The Strigoi are evil vampires; the Moroi vampires are not evil. Her best friend is Lissa, a Mori princess.

Things take a turn for the really bad when some Moroi turn up dead in a house that was protected by an almost invincible guardian. The school is going to go on a ski trip at a protected resort.

(Let's consider this series as a military problem for a moment. The Strigoi know where the academy is. They can't attack openly since the academy is well protected, but they can pick off individual groups of Moroi who live elsewhere. Therefore, it shouldn't be that difficult for the Strigoi to get hold of some form of physical weapons, like bombs, perhaps a nuke or something, and simply destroy the academy and everyone in it from outside.)

(At the same time, couldn't the guardians have established some kind of intelligence outfit of their own to hunt down the places the Strigoi stay, and send out teams to kill them during the daytime when the Strigoi have to avoid sunlight and lay low? Virtually no stories of this kind involve the good guys using all the forms of attack that they could have. It's magical or supernatural or something else, but never really is there any use of magical plus supernatural plus physical weapons types of attack, must less trying to actually hunt down the enemy and attack them when they are most vulnerable.)

Rose encounters her mother, who is a guardian, and things don't go well between them. She later has a training session with her mother, and gets a black eye in the process. Meanwhile Lissa and Christian have sex.

Mason and Rose get closer. Then there's another Strigoi attack, worse than the first one. One person suggests the Moroi start using magic instead of banning its use. (A very, very logical move, in my opinion. Basically, they are involved in a war. The enemy is aggressive and daring. The Moroi are defensive and overconfident, and refuse to use the major weapon they do have.)

Lissa comes up with a great idea to solve the division between those who want to attack the Strigoi, and those who don't. She ends up in Spokane with some others, and they run into trouble. Trouble that costs one of the group his/her own life.

A really exciting, excellent second book in the series, leaving me looking forward to the next one.
