Midnight at the Well of Souls

This is the first in a series of really interesting stories based on an artificially-constructed world consisting of numerous hexagonal-shaped environments. Each hex has a different kind of environment and a different kind of dominant intelligent life form. Some of those life forms are even plants.

Into this world stumbles Nathan Brazil, pilot of an old spaceship, and a group of people on board the ship which consists of a really evil guy named Hain, Wu Julee, basically his slave, and Vardia, from a world where everyone is bred basically to be alike, differing only in their functions.

People who end up at he well world have their bodies redone to fit into one of the hexes, so one person becomes an intelligent plant, one becomes a centaur, one a huge bug-like creature and one doesn't change at all, at least at first.

The story has fascinating life forms (including some very nasty fairies), a multitude of environments, and a good story. Very enjoyable first book in the series.
