Night Child

This is the first of a series of books about Tess Corday, who's a special investigation for Vancouver's Mystical Crime Lab. She checks into things others don't want to like vampires, various monsters, etc. In this case she's checking out the death of a vampire and one thing leads to another. Before long she's doing the best she kind to keep herself and a girl named Mia alive against a group of assassin demons.

She has one person she wants to check out but, unfortunately, the demons got to her first, although the demons themselves end up dead leading Tess to figure someone else is involved in all of this. There's also the problem of a necromancer she has to deal with, a series of beings that are being prepared to take over as the head-honcho vampire for the area, plus a corrupt agent.

It all makes for a rather wild and very good story.
