To Dream in the City of Sorrows

This is definitely a official canon-type of book in the Babylon 5 series. It centers around three people: Jeffrey Sinclair, his would-be wife Catherine Sakai, and Marcus. It takes place after Sinclair left Babylon 5 to before ambassador to Minbar, but before he goes back in time on Babylon 4.

It fills in a lot of holes left in the series as far as all three characters go. For Marcus, it explains what he was doing before he became a Ranger; his relationship with his brother; how his brother was killed, and how Marcus ended up joining the Rangers. It also covers some Minbari history.

For Catherine Sakai, someone who was in some episodes but was then totally forgotten, it explains what she was doing as far as her job goes, her encounter with the Shadows, what she did after that, and what, ultimately, happened to her (at least, sort of explains it.)

As for Sinclair, it deals with his being ambassador to Minbar; the types of problems he encountered with the Military Caste; the founding of the Rangers, and his establishment as Ranger One, and the various political problems that circled around that. It describes some of the Ranger training, and also goes into Valen's history a little.

It also explains what happens when Sinclair, Marcus, and Catherine Sakai have to go up against a bunch of Shadow vessels in order to prevent history from being changed.

It's an excellent book and, although the others are good, this one I would consider a must read.
