The Summoning

Chloe Sanders is the main character of the book. She's been able to see ghosts since she was very young. She's fifteen now, and has seen ghosts since she was at least three, if not younger. Now she attends an arts school. Her mother is dead, and her father travels a lot.

She sees a ghost at school and panics. The teachers mistake what she is doing for an attempt to kill herself. She will have to spend two weeks in a group home for troubled teens as punishment for struggling with the teachers who were trying to hold her down.

She finds out that all the kids there know she's there for saying she sees ghosts. Rae is into playing with fire (literally). Tori has a very nasty temper. Liz is relatively normal, as is Peter. Simon and Derek are somewhat mysterious.

One of the medical people says Chloe has schizophrenia. Chloe and Rae get along well.

Liz get in trouble for throwing a pencil at a teacher, but Liz says it's a poltergeist that threw it, not her. (She exhibits real poltergeist traits, which means she is actually the one who is causing things to move, a form of telekinesis. It's caused by a buildup of emotion that comes out in an uncontrolled form.) Liz is taken away to a hospital or someplace, and later she seems to be in the room with Chloe, but Chloe realizes that it's Liz's ghost.

Peter leaves the house, picked up by his parents. Chloe finally realizes she is really seeing ghosts. She has some trouble with Derek. She finds out Simon can levitate things, a little, and Derek is extraordinarily strong. Simon explains to Chloe about people who have supernatural abilities.

Chloe and Simon plan on escaping to find Simon's father. They are beginning to realize that they are in danger of some kind, but they aren't sure exactly what. After talking to a ghost, Chloe finds out that he place she's at once belonged to a dark sorcerer who experimented on supernaturals, people like Chloe who have special abilities. The two bodies in the basement were supernaturals.

Simon and Rae escape, and then Derek and Chloe, but the last two are hunted down. Chloe gets hurt during the escape and then is betrayed by her aunt and is captured by the evil people from the house.

This is an excellent book with very realistic characters. There is going to be at least one sequel, fortunately.
