Tempest Rising

This is the first in a series of books about a woman named Jane True. She's 26 years-old at the time of the first novel in the series and works in a bookstore in a rather small town. She loves swimming in the ocean, even when it's cold.

The people of the village don't like her and shun her. The woman who was her mother appeared, naked, during a rainstorm one day, a guy fell in love with her, they had a child (Jane), and the woman disappeared equally mysteriously six years later.

If that was all Jane had to put up she could manage that pretty well. But suddenly she finds a dead body which leads to two other dead bodies and a run-in with a wide variety of supposedly mythological creatures including the guy that becomes the love of her life, Ryu, who just happens to be a vampire.

The book includes gnomes, a barghest (a doglike goblin), a kelpie (a water spirit with the form of a horse), a selkie (another water spirit, assumes the form of a seal in the water but a human on land), nagas and various other beings including elves.

Jane herself is a halfling; part human, part selkie. That's enough to turn her into a target of whoever has decided to start killing all the halflings.

Ryu has to investigate what is going on, try to figure out who (or what) the killer is, and at the same time protect Jane, while Jane has to deal with being only partly-human.

It's a really good book and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.
