The Adventure: A Time Story
This is a redo of a book from 1910 about two women who seem to have somehow gone into the past in a garden in Versailles on April 10,1901, ending up in the same garden on the same day but in 1792. This is probably one of the most famous paranormal stories of all. It basically boils down to two possibilities:
1. Both women were lying about everything that happened. They did extensive research before they went to the garden or afterwards and concocted a story about the people they say. They did this to become famous and hopefully rich.
2. They actually went through some sort of timeslip, saw Marie Antoinette and had actual short physical contact with a man from that time.
The two women had their adventure but did not write down their separate take on what happened until three months after their experiences in the garden. To simplify things, they were walking along in the present time seeing present-time people and buildings. Without any warning, and without realizing it for a bit, they seemed to have entered the past where they saw buildings that were no longer there in "present time" and they saw people that were dressed in clothes of another era. In addition, they saw Marie Antoinette outside the building along with other people.
On return trips they found that all the buildings they had seen in the "past" were no longer there. Neither was a forest they had walked through or other things they had interacted with in their journey into the past.
They did very extensive research into the past of that place, drawing on old books and very old maps to see if they tallied with what they had actually seen and in most cases the maps were dead on to what they had spotted. They also researched the type of people who they had seen and what they wore and what version of French they spoke. (Apparently there was regular French and French spoken with an Austrian accent.)
What they found again tallied with what they had seen. They were able to also learn that there was nothing like a fair going on and no reason for a bunch of people to be walking around in out-dated clothing.
Their theory about what happened was that they were somehow seeing the thoughts that Marie Antoinette had in her mind while she was in a cell awaiting her death. In today's world their experience would be referred to as a timeslip.
One odd thing in their experience is that, although they were both in the same place both in present-time and past-time, in the past-time they did not necessarily see exactly the same things. There are differing accounts in relation to who they saw, if they saw anyone, and what they saw, if they saw the same particular things. So, somehow, despite being together they were either not in the same exact past-time or their abilities to observe just what was there were different.
Some other interesting points were that they were both in good health at the time of their sightings and both observed at certain times a general feeling of depression while in the past-time.
The work also contains appendices and lots of footnotes.
