Haunted Plantations: Ghosts of Slavery and Legends of the Cotton Kingdoms

The author does a classification of spirits as unaware spirits (the tape-recorder concept), interactive apirits and poltergeists. Poltergeists generally are believed not to be actual entities, though. They are generally considered to be basically chaotic energy thrown off by adolescents or pre-adolescents without their own knowledge. This results in what is basically telekinesis, the use of mental energy to move objects. The author also says another type of spirit is those who die prematurely and want to deliver some kind of message.

The author goes into a number of examples of spirits. What I found most interesting was the factual material such as the Igbo tribe, the Stone River Slave Rebellion, the Haitian Revolution and the South Carolina act to prohibit teaching slaves to read or write.
