A Not So Simple Wish

Review

This is one of the longest unfinished Ranma-chan fanfics that I've found and it's unlikely that it will be finished.

In this fiction piece Ranma gets a cursed object and ends up a separate female entity, Ranko, in an alternate reality where that reality's Ranma never gets cursed. She is told that, if she can get Ranma to kiss her with affection, she will go back to "her" reality, be 100% male and nothing that happens to her in this reality will be remembered.

So she is going to go after Ranma, but Ranma, in this reality, ends up engaged also to Kasumi. This all sets up a number of different things happening, all of which are very interesting. For example, Ranko ends up making good friends with Kodachi. Happosai, still the pervert, shows a gentler, caring side (to Ranko, at least).

This is really a very, very good series and it's a major shame that it was never finished. It's the type of fanfic that you want to read at one sitting all the way through, it's that good.

Synopsis

Prologue

Ranma buys a wish-granting urn from a Chinese shop, then trashes the shop in a fight with Ryouga. He doesn't notice the owner throw a switch on the device, setting it to "curse" mode.

Ranma wakes up but in girl form. A figure appears and explains to her that a boy-form Ranma is in China and does not get cursed and that she is the spirit of the curse that Ranma had, now with her own home and existence. She will be known as Ranko Xiawang, and had been trained for a bit by Happosai although she hasn't lately displayed any great abilities or interests in the martial arts.

The figure tells her that the only way to ever regain her male self is to make the present Ranma fall in love with her; if she does that she'll end up being 100% male and he'll also undo everything back to the time Ranma was in the magic shop.

Chapter 1

It's a Saturday and Ranko gets ready for school (Until recently, Japanese students attended school Monday through Friday and part of the day on Saturday, not counting the time many of them spend in the special cram, or juku classes after regular school hours.)

She does get to see Akane beat up Kuno, but other than that the whole day passes quietly with no one really paying her any special attention. She goes home and then decides she will need to get some actual feminine clothes in order to attract Ranma's attention.

She then goes to visit Nodoka and says she wants to train with Genma. By carefully watching what she says, she ends up getting Nodoka to think that she might be a good match for Ranma when he returns from China. (Some psychological warfare tactics on Ranko's part, there)

Chapter 2

The next day Ranko goes to the Tendo dojo to challenge them. She tells them she is challenging in the name of her master, Happosai, which really freaks Soun out.

If she wins, she gets the sign of the dojo and that would lower it's value, making their claim on Ranma weaker. Akane ends up accepting the challenge and Ranko figures she can do anything she wants since, if she gets Ranma to kiss her, none of this will have taken place and no one would remember anything she does. (A nice time travel paradox, in a way.)

Ranko actually hits Akane who wants to continue to fight, and then beats her again. Soun then tells Ranko that she must beat him, but she pulls a happodaikarin from her outfit (one of those balls that explode when Happosai throws them), and threatens to use it. Soun goes back to tears and gives her the sign.

Meanwhile, the boulder blocking the cave where Happosai had been sealed up explodes.

Chapter 3

The next day at school Akane challenges her for the sign. Ranko beats her, marking "uncute" on her forehand, but at the same time this draws attention to her, attention which Ranko does not want.

Later Ranko goes to a public bath and there's a very amusing session with Kodachi. Suddenly Happosai appears, glomping on to Ranko's chest.

Chapter 4

Ranko had hit Happosai so hard he went through the bathhouse room and ends up landing some distance away near Akane and Nabiki. Being Happosai, he glomps on to Akane's breasts.

There's a flashback to when (in this magically [cursedally?] constructed reality Happosai met a ten-year-old Ranko and befriended her, she becoming his student.

Happosai also glomps Nabiki's breasts and manages to steal her bra.

When Ranko gets home Happosai is already there.

Chapter 5

Ranko tries to talk Happosai into moving into the Tendos but he doesn't want to and he doesn't glomp her any more, either. They end up sparring for hours, Happosai seriously working with Ranko on her style and abilities.

Ranko ends up causing Akane some trouble by revealing part of the name of a porn magazine she has.

An interesting difference from the manga then is next as Happosai implies that he actually has a good sum of money and he wants to look for a bigger house for them (so he'd have more room for the panties he's been stealing.)

Chapter 6

Ranko watches Kodachi fight Azusa for a ribbon she had stolen from her. Ranko ends up becoming friend with Kodachi instead of fighting her all the time as in the "other" reality.

Both girls end up revealing some of their own vulnerabilities in a fashion generally not found in other fanfiction, especially Kodachi's concerns. She even reveals that she actually hates doing the rhythmic gymnastics and says she's going to quit the team the next day.

That night Ranko is having a nightmare and Happosai helps her, making no attempt to glomp her while she sleeps.

Chapter 7

Ranko and Kodachi keep up their friendship, Kodachi helping her with her schoolwork. Akane attacks Ranko a few more times at school and loses each time, and Kuno doesn't bother Ranko, so things seem to be going fairly well for her.

Ryouga shows up and gets changed into a pig, so somehow he still ends up getting cursed in this reality. Ranko helps him without him knowing its her.

Akane attacks Ranko outside her apartment, but Ranko uses some very unique pressure points on her to get her out of the way.

Nabiki talks to Ranko and arranges to get the dojo sign back by providing Ranko certain information.

Chapter 8

Ranma is back in Japan, and somehow Genma is still a panda. Ranko intercepts Genma before he can hit Ranma in the back of the head with the street sign, trying to ingratiate herself with him.

Genma attacks both of them again, and this time Ranko really knocks him out, taking an unconscious Ranma back to her apartment. She cooks him dinner and then they talk about martial arts, Ranko pointing out she took the Tendo dojo sign and defeated both Soun and Akane.

Ranko then tells him about Nodoka.

Chapter 9

Genma tells about how he fell into the one spring, although Ranma didn't fall into any springs. The engagement is brought up to determine the heir of the dojo and this gets all three girls angry, each one thinking that they were going to be the heir.

Ranko takes Ranma to meet Nodoka and is somewhat sad when Nodoka openly accepts Ranma which is something she wanted to happen in "her" reality but didn't happen.

Unlike the canon world, in this one Akane and Kasumi argue and Kasumi reveals she doesn't want Tofu, that he's too old for her.

Nodoka says Ranma should marry Ranko, which upsets Ranma tremendously.

Chapter 10

They get to the Tendo dojo and Nodoka reveals that she has already made arrangements for Ranko to marry Ranma which doesn't sit well with the sisters. Nodoka finds out that Genma turns into a panda.

Then it's put up to the four girls who wants to marry Ranma. Akane says no; Nabiki says no, but Kasumi says she will for the family's honor, so it will be her competing with Ranko.

Chapter 11

Ranma says that the dojo is worthless since it lost its sign, and Genma says he has to get the sign back from Ranko. Genma asks Ranko who taught her and she says Happosai.

Nodoka takes Genma back to their home thinking that he will get a job (right, sure, real chance of that) and Akane refers to Ranko as a floozy.

Chapter 12

Akane attacks Ranko yet again at school. Akane loses, as usual, and tries to get Kuno to help her. Kuno makes a racist remark about Ranko (about Ranko being half Chinese), though, which gets her angry. Ranko knocks Kuno unconscious. Ranma, meanwhile, has seen all of this happen.

A really funny thing happens when Ranma is introduced to the class and ends up sitting next to Ranko. The story says that Ranko is now considered the cutest girl in school. Akane had been until her taste in porn had been found out and, since she's getting beaten up by Ranko all the time, that she might even be a "closet masochist."

The author also has some really good lines relating to Ranma's machoness, such as "...cursing his overpowering masculinity which girls just had no defense against."

Kuno comes on to Ranko when she is alone, noting that they cannot date in public (due to her being half-Chinese), but they can still do things in secret. She ends up kicking him in the genitals.

Chapter 13

Ranko introduces Ranma to Kodachi and tells her about Kuno hitting on her. Ranma gets really mad at the way Kuno acted. Ranko, meanwhile, runs out of the café, unsure of her feelings about Ranma.

Ranma then meets Happosai who basically is going to test him out to see if he is good enough for Ranko, showing a side of Happosai totally missing from the regular series yet actually something that is very nice.

Chapter 14

Ranma and Happosai fight. Ranma gets beat pretty bad.

Ranko, meanwhile, is having to think out everything going on and she realizes she behaves as if she were two different girls; the properly mannered Ranko Xiawang and the more rough-and-tumble Ranko Tendou.

Chapter 15

Ranma gets home and Genma tells him he shouldn't have angered Happosai.

Ranma and Nabiki have a talk at school. Meanwhile Ranko fights some guy and defeats him easily.

Chapter 16

Ranko is out of the Nermia district and ends up eating at Ukyo's restaurant. Ranko enjoys talking with Ukyo since there is none of the tension or problems between them as there was in the "other" reality.

Upon leaving the restaurant Ranko runs into Ryouga.

Later Ryouga wants to attack Ranma but Ranko stops him. Ranko is beginning to think that "this" Ranma may not be as artificial and unimportant as she originally thought, that he might have an actual existence to him.

Chapter 16

Ranko stops to eat at Ukyo's restaurant and really ends up enjoying just talking to her with none of the fiancee problem relating to her existing in this new reality.

Happosai shows up again and manages to steal Nabiki's panties right off of her, so Ranma and he end up getting in a fight again. Ryouga shows up with Ranko and wants to attack an injured Ranma. Ranko gets him to stop.

Chapter 17

Ranko gets mad at Happosai for attacking Ranma "to see if he was good enough for her." She tells him to get out of her apartment.

In this reality Ryouga got into a fight with Pantyhose Taro (not knowing who he was, of course), lost, and was dropped into the spring of drowned piglet.

Nabiki asks Ranko to let Happosai move back in with them since he decided to move in with the Tendos and has been causing a lot of trouble for them.

Meanwhile Ranma beats Ryouga easily.

Chapter 18

At dinner Ranko gets upset and leaves for the bathroom. Nodoka explains her parents are dead (in this reality), and that Genma should get to know her some, but he doesn't want to, considering Kasumi the only real fiancee.

Kasumi gets home and finds out Akane has trashed the kitchen and she's upset. (This Kasumi is a little more real than the "other reality" Kasumi), while Nabiki says that Happosai was poisoned by Akane's cooking and so she put him in a box to be mailed to Antarctica or returned to Ranko, either.

Chapter 19

Genma and Ranko go out to eat at a cheap place. He keeps trying to talk her out of marrying Ranma. While at the restaurant, though, three yakuza come in with guns drawn, looking for Genma.

Genma had stolen money from the yakuza. When they threaten him he just grabs Ranko and holds her in front of him saying for them to take her and leave him alone.

Ranko fights them and defeats them but gets shot in the process (a flesh wound).

Genma takes her elsewhere and gets her drunk and tricks her into signing a paper, supposedly giving up her interest in Ranma, but it doesn't work like he suspected it would.

The package Nabiki sent ends up being delivered to Ranko's apartment.

Chapter 20

Happosai climbs out of the box and explains what happened to him.

At school Nabiki talks to Ranko, showing her a newspaper article about what had happened the previous day with the yakuza. Later Ranko and Akane actually start to get along.

Chapter 21

Kasumi, Ranma and Ranko go on a training trip together. Gemna cut up Kasumi's tent, hoping Ranma and Kasumi will share one together, but Ranko and Kasumi end up sharing.

Kasumi wants to be friends with Ranko. Ranko, though, finds out from Kasumi that she would have turned down Ranma if he had been any kind of a "freak," confirming why in her "other" reality Kasumi and Nabiki had pushed Ranma off onto Akane. This doesn't make Ranko feel very good at all.

Ranko is developing a lot of self-loathing over what she is doing to get her way with Ranma.
