Is ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’ Based On A True Story?

Amazon's series is a 'super-stylized, hypnotic retelling' of the story.
The book the movie is based on does not claim the story is true but it also doesn't say it's not true.
The book might be based, though, on real life events as told in the book Beyond the Rock.
Two girls had gone missing near that area and might have been abducted.
(My own point: Since Joan Lindsay was a mystic and could see past and future events maybe it's possible she saw what happened to those two girls in her dream and that formed, unconsciously, part of her novel.)
The abductions occurred before Joan Lindsay was born.
