Crime Classics #3

The Shadow manages to avoid falling through the trap doors but fights one thug that then falls through the doors himself. The Shadow locates the pilot and the scientist, both of whom were supposed to be dead. They tell him that Kalgar is forcing them to make robot planes that can drop the gas on American cities on the seaboard.

Thugs kidnap the woman and another guy and take them to the castle. The guy, though, turns out to be Kalgar. His thugs think they have shot down the Shadow's plane.

The Shadow lands in his autogyro and gets into a gunfight with the thugs, gradually working his way through them towards the castle.

As the thugs close in on the room with the scientist and the pilot, though, the Shadow throws grenades filled with sleep gas, which he had previously told the two men to prepare. The gas knocks out the remaining gangsters and their leader, Kalgar.

Another story is started, “The Shadow versus Hoang Hu.”

The Shadow is disguised as a drunken sailor. Other thugs end up on a Chinese junk and the Shadow, as Lamont, crashes his plane near the boat. The thugs pick him up, thinking he's just a normal type of guy.

The Shadow forces a Chinese on the ship to show him what's in some crates, and its some sort of valuable statue. Apparently the Shadow's name in Chinese is Ying Ko. Anyhow, the language used is normal for the times: “Ying Ko! Him findee Joss.”

Just as the Shadow is about to be overwhelmed by thugs and Chinese a Coast Guard cutter fires on the ship. The crooks remove the joss statues. The Shadow finishes off some of the crooks and a landing party from the cutter finishes off the leader of the group.

Later another Chinese tries to finish off the Shadow in a hotel room and fails. The Shadow finds out from a Chinese businessman that the joss statue will make Hoang Hu the leader of some powerful gang.

A woman working in the office of the guy Lamont has been visiting is really working with the crooks. She listens in to conversations and reports them to someone.

Later the Shadow is captured by Chinese crooks and they plan to chop off his head.

My own comments: This story is beginning to get to be quite unrealistic. The Shadow in this story, and in some of the others, to a lesser degree, seems to be almost careless at times, falling into trap doors, being overpowered, etc. This version of the Shadow doesn't seem to be quite as powerful as the pulp story version.
