Issue 1

The first noticeable thing is the cover where the Shadow does not hehe his usual mask on. The story opens in China where the Japanese are carrying out their invasion of the Chinese mainland, killing hundreds of thousands of Chinese, especially in cities like Nanking. The story is called The Fire of Creation.

The Shadow is after two specific Japanese. There are a bunch of thugs working with them, but after the Shadow kills a bunch of them the others decide they needed to be someplace else. Lamont is then seen in the Cobalt Club and there is discussion about whether or not the United States and Japan will go to war.

The Shadow also seems to have two powers in this series that I haven't seen elsewhere. First, he can get information from someone who has just died. Second, he has the ability to see into the future of an individual, although doing that with children is easier than doing it with adults.

Lamont's relationship with Margo seems to be a rather complex one. Margo asks Lamont if he will be the Shadow forever and he says he'll be the Shadow longer than she will be Margo Lane.
