The House that Vanished

In this story the Shadow has to find an entire house that seems to have vanished! It's a house of murder, where two men find a body, only to be drugged and left somewhere else. No one can find the house except the Shadow!

Chapter 1: House of Doom: Goodling is a new prosecutor, and a friend of his, Lanford, is driving him in a bad storm. They are told a bridge is out and seek shelter and a phone in a house they find on the road.

They are greeted by a nasty person named Croy, who leaves to get somewhere else, leaving the two men alone in a room in the spooky old mansion.

Chapter 2: Living and Dead: The meet a young girl named Myra and two other male characters are introduced, Daggart and Kermal. Left alone again, the two men end up finding a dead body in another room and end up getting jumped and drugged, then dragged outside the house.

Chapter 3: Harry Vincent and Mann, both agents of the Shadow, talk. An article in the paper covers the strange events surrounding Goodling and Lanford, and the Shadow is now involved in the case.

Clyde Burke, another agent, and Harry Vincent do some exploring on their own. Yet neither man can find the missing house.

Chapter 4: The Vanished House: A man is strolling in the area where the house might be, and it's the Shadow. He finds out something strange happened to a road sign, and before long the Shadow finds the house that no one else can find.

Exploring the house, the Shadow finds a major clew that was left behind by the others when they hastily left the house. He decides to wait, knowing that someone will be sent to pick up the missing trunk.

Chapter 5: The Man in the Sedan: Lanford and Burke talk, and then Lanford is abducted by Croy when he tries to attack the man while he is driving a car. Burke is later thrown off the car but isn't seriously injured.

Chapter 6: Death Bears Witness: Goodling holds a press conference. A Doctor Claig is there, who is a trusted man. The basic plot is revealed, wherein it is supposed that Kemal is holding Myra, who is to come into an inheritance when she turns 21, and plans to force her to sign over the money in a way that he can get his hands on a good portion of it.

A guy named Yager shows up to testify (he's pretty much a ruffian-type), and he claims to know the man killed in the house. He claims to know a lot, but before he can reveal all he knows he's killed when someone shoots him from outside the building.

Chapter 7: Killers in the Dark: Exactly as the Shadow had expected, men show up to pick up the trunk. While he's talking to the two men, others arrive and a furious gun battle ensues.

Goodling and others arrive afterwards and recover the trunk, giving them a clue to Myra's existence.

Chapter 8: The Law Prepares: The prosecutor finds out that Lanford is now missing. Another player on the stage, Rufus Dolthan, meanwhile arrives. He claims that Kermal is holding Myra and wants her to sign some papers so that, indirectly, he can get a lot of money himself.

Chapter 9: The Shadow's Finding: Clyde and Harry write out their reports to the Shadow. The Shadow picks up their reports right under their noses without either man realizing that the Shadow was in the room.

The Shadow realizes that Kermal could have killed Goodling and Lanford and easily made it appear to be an accident, yet he didn't kill either man.

The Shadow also realizes that Doctor Claig is heavily involved in whatever is going on.

Chapter 10: Kermal Decides: the Shadow makes his way to Claig's “house” and eavesdrops on a conversation involving Claig and Kermal. They plan to talk to Lanford and try to get him on their side.

Chapter 11: Lanford Agrees: Kermal and Claig are both very nice to Lanford, treating him very well, saying he's not a prisoner but a guest. Kermal tries to convince Lanford that, if Myra should die before her 21st birthday, her money will go to a rather disreputable relative, and he doesn't want that to happen.

Kermal claims Blissop had betrayed them and was killed by Croy to prevent Blissop from killing Daggart.

Chapter 12: From the Night: Myra is brought into the room and she seems open to answering questions and not under any duress. Claig is worried about Myra being restored to her uncle, Rufus Dolthan. Meanwhile Lanford agrees to go along with Kermal and his plans.

Chapter 13: The Shadow's Promise: The Shadow gets into the room where Myra is and talks to her. Her arranges a signal for her and he sets it up so that the bars to her window (almost every window is barred; it had been a sanitarium), can be removed fairly easily. Everything is set in place.

Chapter 14: The Law's Quest: Claig deals with a private detective and Clyde Burke, who both end up at his “house” and talk to him. Clyde encounters the Shadow and gives him a report on what has been happening.

Chapter 15: The Last Day: This is the day that Myra turns 21, and that she will be expected to sign some papers. It's also possibly the last day that she will be alive.

Clyde and Harry are working together and the Shadow communicates with them via his radio. They begin to put into play a plan to block whatever was going to happen to Myra, but their plan included stealing a diary right off the prosecutor's desk.

Chapter 16: The Zero Hour: Clyde and Harry's plan works, and the private detective discovers the diary, leading him to the conclusion that Dr. Claig has Kermal and Myra in his own “house.”

Goodling, the detective, Rufus and various others gather, prepared to storm Dr. Claig's habitat, if necessary, in order to rescue Myra.

Chapter 17: Men From The Night: Harry communicates with the Shadow via the radio, and he and Clyde make their own way to Dr. Claig's place, taking a different route than the others.

Soon Goodling is at the house and starts talking to the doctor while other men get in position and the Shadow watches everything that is happening.

Goodling and Farrell get the upper hand on the doctor and they make him open the door to where the other people are located.

Chapter 18: Counsel for Defense: The rescue team confronts the doctor and Kermal. Lanford says that Myra is all right, and that money is going to be given to charities. Kermal tries to explain himself, and his explanation seems to be logical and believable.

Suddenly the real villain is revealed when Rufus draws his own weapon.

Chapter 19: Facts Come Out: The entire chapter deals with Rufus' plans, who is working with him, and what he plans to do with Myra.

Chapter 20: After Midnight: A wild chapter with a really good gunfight. Rufus goes to kill Myra, but finds out that the Shadow has made his preparations and Myra is safe. Rufus, the mastermind villain, ends up being killed.

Chapter 21: Word to the Victors: This chapter has the various people there finding out what happened and how the Shadow aided the good men and set it up so the evil men would lose.

Chapter 22: The Shadow Departs: Myra gives her view of what happened and how the Shadow aided her.
