132. The Yellow Band

This is an interesting story. The main character is really Kent Allard. He spends almost all the time in the Kent Allard persona, a little bit of time as Lamont Cranston, and a little bit of time as The Shadow. Allard is referred to as a “noted explorer.”

The basic plot involves a gang that is pulling off a series of robberies and murders in Miami. The Shadow has become involved and he arranges for Joe Cardona to come down there and help out.

The group of crooks is pretty intelligent, though, and the police facing them are not so intelligent, so they are able to get the police to think that Allard is the main villain. Matching wits with the Shadow is not a winning proposition in the long run, though, and the crooks find themselves exposed and caught.

I personally prefer the stories where the Shadow spends most of his time as The Shadow. I also like the stories where there is a number of his agents involved and, in this story, Harry Vincent is the only one to play an important role. When little time is spent on the Shadow as himself than it can almost seem as if the person who is the crime-fighter could be almost any crime fighter and this lessens the value of the story.
