The Grove of Doom

This is another Shadow story that involves an Oriental menace. Lei Chang is the typical Chinese stereotype. Koon Woon is another threat.

The basic story involves a family that doesn't get along. There is Harvey Chittenden, the family outcast. Against him stand his father and his others, Harvey Wilbur and Zachary. There's also Jessup, who works for Harvey. Jessup is a handyman and also a crook. Mildred is Harvey's wife.

The main problems begin when people enter the grove of trees and never come out. An attorney disappears along with several others. The body count goes up as the Shadow investigates. Things turn out to be fairly complicated with a lot of hate on both sides of the family, and high greed on the part of one person.

Things get out of hand and the exact reason for why the grove is one of doom is revealed and is somewhat surprising. I consider it one of the better books in the series.
