Town of Hate

July, 1944

In a rural setting live two men. One has a mansion that is old fashioned, which matches his ideas of what direction the nearby town and the valley should be going in. The other is a mansion belonging to a “modern” type of person, who also has his own ideas. The clash between the views of the two men has divided the town.

The situation worses when money begins to be stolen, farms are set on fire, and vigilante mobs go out seeking their own form of justice.

Into this mess steps the Shadow, with Margo Lane and three of his agents. They need to solve just who is behind the series of crimes, and how can they stop them. Lamont Cranston has to play the part of a rich investor, but it's the Shadow who considers the history of the area and how that history might play into the hands of the man, or men, who are behind the hatred in the town.

There's a lot of action in this, and I especially like how the Shadow uncovers some hidden passageways. The resolution of the story was also somewhat surprising. The only negative thing I would have to say about the story is the presence of Margo Lane who is, basically, utterly useless as far as the story goes.
