The Silent Avenger, March 13, 1938

Another Blue Coal sponsored episode of the series. As usual, the show opens with a commercial. There's also an ad for the Shadow magazine, where you can receive a copy of the pulp from Blue Coal, one free copy.

Another court scene. A guy is found guilty of murder in the first degree. The criminal passes his own judgment on the judge, the prosecutor, the jury and the Shadow. The criminal claims one person will be killed for every day he sits in death row, and that the governor of the state will die if the criminal is actually put to death.

The judge goes ahead and sentences the criminal to death. Lamont and Margo were in the courtroom.

The unknown is so often associated with evil, Lamont says. He says the Shadow will visit the criminal in the prison.

At the prison, Brecker, the criminal, is being visited by his brother. The criminal has told the brother about what is to be done as far as killing the people. His brother had been shell-shocked during WWI, and from the way he talks it's obvious that he's not operating on all thrusters.

Brecker also warns his brother about the Shadow.

Brecker tells his brother to carry hand-grenades with him and throw the grenade where he thinks the voice is coming from.

Brecker then hears the voice of the Shadow. Brecker admits he plans to carry out the threat he made against the jury and the others. The Shadow describes Brecker's brother to him, saying he's reading Brecker's mind. Danny, the brother, is one his way to get a rifle; he was a sniper during the war.

Brecker tells the Shadow that he won't stop his brother.

One of the jurors is on the street and a guy is guarding him. He gets shot and killed. Margo is talking to Lamont about Brecker's brother and Lamont has not been able to find him.

The newspaper carries the story of the juror being killed. One of the female jurors is on the street, having slipped away from her guardian. She's also shot and killed.

Judge Wilson is being talked to by another guy who cautions him to close the window. The governor calls the judge and says he can't commute Brecker's sentence. The governor is supposed to ride in a parade the next day. Suddenly the judge is killed while talking on the phone.

Then it's time for another commercial. The guy says Blue Coal is the best coal to use during variable weather. It burns down to a fine powdery ash. It's prepared exclusively for home use. The narrator talks about sales being up for Blue Coal (which is something they've been claiming on a lot of the shows.)

Margo arrives in her car. Lamont says he's been looking for Danny and he hasn't been able to find him. The Shadow has looked up the guy's military record. He says Danny is the product of our own folly, teaching men to kill in time of war but also expecting them to behave well during peacetime. Brecker is supposed to be put to death in ten minutes.

Margo is to talk to Brecker's mother. The woman is worried about Danny, and just then Danny shows up. Danny says he's been doing what his brother told him to do. Danny knows Margo is there.

When Joe, the brother, is killed at five, Danny will go out and keep his word to his brother and kill again. The mother knows that Danny is the person who has been killing the others. The clock strikes five, Joe's dead, and Danny says he has to return to the tower to do what he needs to do.

Danny suddenly hears the voice of the Shadow. Danny pulls the hand-grenade and the throws the grenade. The Shadow picks it up and throws it out the window before it can explode.

Later, Lamont is back in his office (?). He's lost track of Danny again. He's looking for a tower that he can use to pick off the governor during the parade. Margo reminds Lamont of something, and Lamont thinks he knows which tower the guy will shoot from.

Margo drives him to the (still unfinished) tower. The parade can be heard, and Danny is talking to himself. He can see the governor's auto approaching. Then he suddenly hears the voice of the Shadow. Danny thought he had killed the Shadow.

The Shadow tells him not to kill any more people. Danny says he just needs to kill one more person, the governor, because he promised his brother. The Shadow tells him to put down his rifle. Danny has another grenade. The Shadow tells Danny to crawl back to the catwalk and he tells the Shadow not to come near him.

Danny threatens to drop the grenade and kill dozens of people. The Shadow tells him to hold the grenade tightly and Danny obeys him. It then explodes.

The rifle fell into the street in front of the governor's car. The police commissioner thinks it was a bomb that was set off prematurely. Then the voice of the Shadow sounds. He says there is no glory in the death of Danny Brecker. He talks about how mankind teaches men to kill in time of war but forget their art in the time of peace. Danny was a killer because others made him a killer. The Shadow says there is no glory in the solution of the case for anyone.

Then it's time for the final commercial of the show. This one is for hot water heaters. They repeat the offer for a free copy of The Shadow magazine.
