Traffic in Death, 9-25-1938

The first show of the fifth season, using a different voice for the Shadow.

It opens with some guy wanting his son released from an asylum. He didn't know that his son had died the previous night. A guy dies there. Then a woman dies, also at the asylum. Six have died from the same kind of thing.

One guy says that he thinks the deaths are the result of murder. The guy has sent a telegraph to Lamont asking for his help. The guy he's talking to sounds like a German.

(The background music being used is really loud and different from normal.)

Lamont and Margo both are coming to the asylum. Dr. Lee was the one who sent the telegram, and once saved the Shadow's life by removing a bullet near his spine.

They get to the asylum. They ask to see Dr. Lee. They go up to his office. Lamont says that all of them died by having all the blood drained from their bodies. He's dead, stabbed to death.

Somebody gets out of the elevator. It's a guy from the laboratory. Lamont tells him that a surgical knife was used to kill him. Lee was killed within the last hour.

The police get there and say Lamont and Margo are cleared of any involvement with the murder. Commissioner Weston came with other police. Lamont talks to a guy named Hardwick.

Lamont lets him know that the deaths have been murders. He adds he still needs to find the criminal and the motive. Lamont becomes the Shadow. Hardwick gets back. Hardwick admits that the death reports were falsified, and that the blood from the people was kept since it can be sold. Hardwick admits he's the one who killed the people.

Hardwick plans to take Margo somewhere and kill her. Then the voice of the Shadow is heard. Hardwick has a gun and shoots at a curtain, thinking the Shadow was behind it. The Shadow identifies himself.

Hardwick grabs Margo and uses her as a hostage. Hardwick takes Margo to the lab and gives her an anesthetic. (Insert more unusual music here). Then he hears the voice of the Shadow. The Shadow and the doctor fight, the Shadow winning. He has knocked out the doctor. (The actor planning the Shadow messes up a couple of words.) Hardwick becomes awake and has a gun. He uses the gun on himself.
