Death Under the Chapel, 9-4-1938

Margo and Lamont are out walking. Lamont talks about his time at college, and a friend of his that is deformed. Lamont gets a local newspaper, and Margo reads a story about a kid that killed himself two days before graduation.

Margo wants to find out why the kid killed himself. The scene them moves to a room in the college and a professor and an instructor talking. The instructor worries about “the nature of” the professor's teaching. The professor is the one who is deformed. A Dr. Windwood enters. The guy asks for the resignation of the professor from the faculty. They college faculty has major questions about the things that the professor teaches.

Windwood accuses the professor's teachings of causing the suicide of the kid. He talks about the suicide note the kid left, blaming the professor, and he adds that the professor is dishonorably dismissed from the faculty.

The professor says he needs “absolute belief” in him. The professor has been preparing for this moment. The professor plans to put a set off a bomb during the graduation ceremony. The instructor is told that he will help the professor.

The instructor jumps out the window.

The scene changes to a party that night. Dr. Windwood is there. (The name might be Windward; I can't tell for sure.) He tells Lamont that the professor has been thrown off the faculty, and they know he's responsible for the kid's suicide. Lamont goes to visit the professor.

Lamont offers to help the professor. The professor says the world has “dared to defy” him. The professor tells Lamont how he communicates with his deaf/mute helper.

The professor says he is “wiser than all the rest of mankind put together.”

The professor's helper brings in the instructor who tried to escape before. The professor says he plans to ruin the college, which is why he's planting the bomb. The instructor is locked into the room. Then he hears the voice of the Shadow. The instructor tells him that the professor plans to blow up the Chapel.

The Shadow follows the professor and his helper to the professor's lab. Then the professor hears the voice of the Shadow. It's just a few minutes until the graduation exercises. The Shadow has some kind of bomb he can drop right then and blow himself and the Shadow up.

The Shadow then calls Margo on the radio. Margo tries to get into the chapel to warn President Windwood of the bomb. She can't get past the Irish policeman. He picks up Margo and takes her somewhere.

The Professor and his helper are in a room underneath the chapel. The Shadow is also there. The Professor turns out the light, and says his helper will kill the Shadow in the dark. The Professor claims he has now trapped the Shadow. He tells Anton, his helper, to find and kill the Shadow.

Anton follows the sound of the Shadow's voice. The Shadow taps the wall to simulate the professor's code. He tells Anton that he's in a room with a time bomb. Anton smashes the door down and flees. The Shadow takes the bomb away, and turns it off. The professor takes a cyanide pill and kills himself.
