Night Without End, 10-16-1938

The story opens with some guy talking about no sun for three days because “the world is evil and sinful.” He says it's the end of the world.

The weather bureau has no explanation of what is going on. Only one city seems to be affected. Riots break out. The darkness is a black fog of some sort.

Some fire-fighters crash into a building since they can't see where they are going. The next scene is at the paper, where a guy talks to Clyde Burke who is at Commissioner Weston's. What is going on is a form of extortion. The darkness is due to a machine that some evil guy has gotten hold of.

(There's a high body count in this story; quite high.) Weston explains to some other guys what has happened, and it's a kind of smoke-screen device. A Dr. Heath meets with Weston. It's Heath's machine that is being used. He says he escaped from the guys that stole the machine. They have sent him with a warning, and that a horrible fate awaits the city if they don't get their money.

The fog-device can be converted to an offensive weapon. A deadly gas can be pumped into the fog. This will be done if they don't get their money within the next six hours.

Lamont and Margo are listening to the radio. Lamont says it's time for the Shadow to get involved.

Weston says the money will be paid. The phone rings and it's the Shadow. Weston is really nasty to him. The Shadow says he can follow Dr. Heath to the meeting with the crooks. Weston says thousands have been killed all ready.

Next season: Margo and Lamont are following the guy in a car. The plan is to stop the guy's car for a moment, allowing Lamont to change to the Shadow and get into Heath's car. The Shadow tells Heath to drive on.

The crooks have Heath's son. Heath stops and gets into the other car. One of the crooks blows up Heath's car with a hand grenade.

Later the crooks get onto a ship. The name of the boss is Zaroff. Zaroff and Heath are led down to where the machine is. Zaroff says he's going to kill both of them. Zaroff still plans to release the gas. He also plans to go after other cities.

Then the voice of the Shadow is heard. Zaroff gets into a cabinet and releases the gas into the ship. Heath and the Shadow find some tanks of gas, and the Shadow plans to set a fire under them; that could lead to a major explosion, and destroy the boat and the machine.

The Shadow calls Margo on the radio. (Again, where does he have it?)

Heath and his son escape. The Shadow is with them; there's also gas around the ship. Heath plans to run back on to the ship, thinking the fire has gone out, but the ship explodes.

Next scene: Margo is driving a car with Lamont in it; Lamont has been affected by the gas. Heath and his son survived. As they talk, the black fog stars to thin.
