Murder in E-flat 12-4-1938

The episode opens with people at a party, music in the background. The music is jazz of some kind with some incredibly bad singing, I think, in the background. As the guy hits a high note, there's an explosion.

There was a note; "The only real music is the music of silence."

Someone is driving. The woman is angry and wants her husband to blow the car's horn. He does, and the car explodes. There's a note left there, also. "Let this be a warning to you, auto horns are the playthings of the devil. Silence."

Lamont is talking to Margo. The previous night a boat had blown up in the river with another note left. A tuning fork was found at the boat's wreck.

Next we shift to an airport. A guy is taking off, his mother and someone else watching. There's an explosion and the plane blows up.

Next it's Commissioner Weston. They have found another note. "The roar of traffic is the roar of doom. Silence."

They now know what sets off the bombs. The phone rings, and it's the Shadow. The tuning forks are E-flat tuning forks. The Shadow wants Weston to warn everyone that there must be absolute silence until the murderer is caught. At least, no loud noises.

A couple of guys are talking. The city is very quiet. It's been four days of silence. A couple is arguing, the guy tired of the silence. Then it's to Lamont and Margo talking. They are checking music stores to see which ones have sold E-flat tuning forks.

Store after store says it hasn't sold any tuning forks. At one store Margo is waiting for Lamont. A clerk talks to her, telling her they did actually sell some tuning forks, but a long time ago. It was sold to a doctor who is also a musician. The clerk gives her the guy's address. She decides to go off and check the address herself.

Margo gets to the guy's place. He's a doctor of music. Margo claims to be a music student. The guy says he's a composer. He keeps remarking on how beautiful she is. She wants to leave, but he won't let her go. The studio that they are in is soundproof. He shows her an electric organ. He will play his "Symphony of Silence in E-flat.""

He shows her a bomb. He plans to kill her and him both. He starts playing the organ. Then he hears the voice of the Shadow. He keeps playing the organ, and the music stinks. He gets to the finale.

Margo has fainted. The doctor seems to be dead. The Shadow defused the bomb while the guy was playing. The doctor wakes up, though. The Shadow gets him to tell why he has been using bombs. He says the only peace is the sound of silence. There are still three bombs in the city. The guy tells him where one of the bombs is. For some reason, there's nothing about where the other two bombs are.

Then the episode then suddenly shifts to Lamont and Margo talking about the terror being ended.
